In my opinion, there are many ways that learning can occur because they are many
different learning styles. Some people learn best by hearing, seeing, working with their hands, or
moving around as they soak in information. I learn a lot better when I attempt a task for myself
after I see someone else complete a particular task. Observational learning occurs when someone
can visually watch someone complete a task and be able to produce this task with mastery
(National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018, pg. 38) Learning in this way
can help students to retain new information that they might not have known before. It can get
students to see how to complete the task to know the right way that it should be done before
attempting to do it themselves.
The book also states that learning can also take place when students form habits (National
Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018, pg. 39). Some students can easily
learn information by simply doing it over and over again to perfect their craft. I believe when
you form positive habits such as this, you are able to process and visualize information in your
head and apply it which makes the process become second nature to the learner. Conditioning
yourself to form healthy habits can take practice just like forming unhealthy habits. With
unhealthy habits it causes a student to have to unlearn something for them to relearn it the right
way. In my kindergarten class, I feel like it takes a whole lot of reinforcing and conditioning to
allow the students to learn how to add and subtract. The more the students practice on these skills
in class and at home the more they will be able to retain the information being taught.
My favorite way of learning is by guessing. Sometimes you may be able to guess the
right answer to a test or think on prior knowledge that allows you to form educated guesses. By
using abductive reasoning you are able to make guesses about things that you may come across
(National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018, pg. 50). Such as “The earth
is flat, because when we walk around it feels like it’s flat.” Although you may be guessing, it
may not always be correct and this level of thinking will ultimately get people to research their
inferences to be able to see what solutions that they may be able to come up with.
